Our Review

Primarily recorded on July 9, 1965 in one 24-hour recording session, Otis Redding’s third album, Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul, remains one of the landmarks of mid-60s R&B and soul music. This Collector’s Edition is the definitive version, offering both the mono and stereo mixes of the album (which include several different takes among them, including the slower, expanded version of “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”), singles, b-sides and live tracks featuring either a rough pick-up group or Redding’s seasoned house band. All of Redding’s interpretive and vocal power is here, in his inspired originals — “Respect,” which would become a huge hit for Aretha Franklin, “Ole Man Trouble,” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” (written with Jerry Butler) in various mixes and versions — in the three Sam Cooke covers in tribute to the recently slain singer (“Change Gonna Come,” “Shake,” and “Wonderful World”), in the horn-powered cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” and more. The b-sides and alternate single mixes are a nice compliment, but it’s Otis on stage, feeding off the energy of the crowd and sending it back with his toughest, grittiest best that represents the full-dimension of his unique and never equaled talent.

Classic Even Better (5 stars)
For those who complain about too many songs on this album…say what? You are complaining about too many Otis Redding songs? What's wrong with you? Redding was one of the great voices of the 60s and an indispensable artist in the history of rock, soul, R&B, and ever genre in between. This is a fantastic document to the artist's true greatness and an essential purchase for every fan of music.

10.0 from Pitchfork (5 stars)
What the previous reviewer doesn't know is there are two complete versions of the album in this package: one mono, one stereo. Add the live cuts and, yes, you will see a lot of "repeats." But the quality is undiluted. There is nothing but pure soul on this album. One of the finest, most passionate, most nuanced records of the modern age. Ignore the boo-birds; this is the real thing!

Awesome!! (5 stars)
I'll just let the album speak for itself. Amazing. nuf said.

Biography

Born: September 09, 1941 in Dawson, GA
Genre: R&B/Soul
Years Active: '60s

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern “deep soul” — hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through…

Biography

Born: May 10, 1946 in Glasgow, Scotland
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Upon his emergence during the mid-'60s, Donovan was anointed “Britain's answer to Bob Dylan,” a facile but largely unfounded comparison which compromised the Scottish folk-pop troubadour's own unique vision. Where the thrust of Dylan's music remains its bleak introspection and bitter realism, Donovan fully embraced the wide-eyed optimism of the flower power movement, his ethereal, ornate songs radiating a mystical beauty and childlike wonder; for better or worse, his recordings remain quintessential…

Our Review

Scottish folksinger Donovan Leitch had first emerged as a lighter-weight Bob Dylan, complete with harmonica rack and songs that shifted between vague protest and poetic symbolism. However, Donovan hooked up with producer Mickie Most and together the two sculpted a gorgeous psychedelic pop that emphasized and reflected the hippy-trippy sentiments to which the young songwriter was unquestionably drawn. In an era of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and the Beatles’ Revolver, 1966’s Sunshine Superman sounds perfectly in step, a mix of progressive sounds and ancient sounding folk hymns (“Guinevere,” “Three King Fishers”). The title track chugs with a swooping, descending riff. “Season of the Witch” turns two chords into an eerie warning statement.  “Bert’s Blues” tips its hat to Scottish folk guitarist extraordinaire Bert Jansch. “The Fat Angel” nods towards the Mamas and Papas’ Mama Cass. But most affecting is Donovan’s tribute to his future wife, “Legend of a Girl Child Linda,” a mystical folk lullaby that features one of his most gorgeous melodies.

Donovan's Best Album (5 stars)
Let me declare from the get-go that I am a huge admirer of Donovan. However, it hasn't spared me from recognizing that many of his studio albums were spotty at best. At times his poetry can be unimaginably trite and frankly embarassing (have you heard "I Love My Shirt"?) But this album is amazing. This is his Sgt Pepper. Obviously he was dabbling with psychedelics ("The Trip")and he was at the height of fame. All of

"Sunshine Superman" is a great album (5 stars)
I've loved this album since I was 16 years old. Love at first listen, just as with the Beatles, Dylan's 2nd album (remember when the needle was first let down on "Blowin' in the Wind"?), and others. Beautiful, trippy, sunny, shimmering, sparkling, reboant, phantastic. If you like the Incredible String Band, Dylan, Bert Jansch, Fairport Convention, Mamas and Papas, The Byrds, etc., you'll like this.

Groovy (5 stars)
This album is really groovy. It's definatly Donovan's best, one of the best of 1966, and the sixties. Anyone with any taste in music would like this album, I like it and I'm only 13.
