Our Review

James Brown hated losing control. So when dissension in his band’s ranks threatened his then never-ending tour, he recalled a group of kids who’d worked sessions he’d produced for members of the revue. Called into service within hours, the new, stripped-down outfit Brown dubbed the J.B.’s — among them brothers Bootsy (bass) and Catfish (guitar) Collins and saxophonist Robert McCulloch — was soon putting its own mark on the funk. Their first shot, “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” ended up as one of Brown’s signature pieces, heard in two distinct versions on Funk Power 1970: A Brand New Thing, a chronicle of one key year in his history. Brown exhorts a squalling McCulloch to “Blow me some Trane, brother!” on the massive statement of ego and soul that is “Super Bad” (heard here in its full-force nine-minute take), while other glowing proofs of the man’s theories (the remake of “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose,” “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” and the previously unreleased “I Got to Move,” a twist on “There Was a Time”) further nail down this group’s reputation.

Our Review

In the '60s, Stevie Wonder made some of Motown's best singles. In the '70s, he matured, using his newfound creative freedom to craft some of the most thoughtful music of the decade. What makes Signed, Sealed, Delivered such an explosively great album is that it captures him at a flashpoint. The title track remains one of Motown's most exuberant single, and that giddy joy continues through “Candy,” “Anything You Want Me To Do,” and a cover of “We Can Work It Out” that makes the Beatles sound like they slept through the original. “I Can't Let Heaven Walk Away” and “Don't Wonder Why” are the first glances of how the adult Stevie would go on to change musically over the years.

Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon and an indisputable genius not only of R&B but popular music in general. Blind virtually since birth, Wonder's heightened awareness of sound helped him create vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition. Nearly everything he recorded bore the stamp of his sunny, joyous positivity; even when he addressed serious racial, social, and spiritual issues (which he did quite often in his prime), or sang about heartbreak and romantic uncertainty,…

Our Review

Aligning himself so closely to the psychedelia of the late ‘60s, Donovan ran into commercial difficulties as a new decade began. Released in 1970, Open Road is a very good Donovan album at a time when people had started to look elsewhere and his record label was not perfectly aligned with his star. How else to explain the lack of interest in such solid material? The album begins with a tougher British blues underlying “Changes,” but “Song for John” and the modest hit “Riki Tiki Tavi” are prime Donovan. The beautiful psychedelia revisited of the piano-mad “Celtic Rock” set the template for Led Zeppelin’s folk excursions where rock is very much part of the British folk equation. “Clara Clairvoyant” slinks with a sexy funk that leads to a scream. “Roots of Oak” spooks out with a psych-folk groove from the not-so-distant past. ”Poke At the Pope” simply rocks like Donovan never had before. Donovan wouldn’t be much of a commercial force in the ‘70s, but his legacy was intact for future generations.

This album is one of Donovan's best. Most people who I've played it to are pleasantly surprised to hear this version of Donovan. Even fans of his sixties radio hits are generally unfamiliar with this material. It's too bad; this surely contains some of his best compositions. If you like good folk, celtic, or rock, you'll love this album.

A lost gem. Deserves to be much better known (5 stars)
Many people didn't know it, but Donovan did not get stuck in the psychedelic late 60's. The entertainment media- record companies and radio programmers- chose to stick him there. Always moving on, looking for the next thing, so ready to forget. As Stackridge sang: "Here I lie, dashed to the ground. Thrown by the hands that applauded my sound." So Donovan was dismissed as hippy-triipy and yesterday's news- while all the while he w

Upon his emergence during the mid-'60s, Donovan was anointed “Britain's answer to Bob Dylan,” a facile but largely unfounded comparison which compromised the Scottish folk-pop troubadour's own unique vision. Where the thrust of Dylan's music remains its bleak introspection and bitter realism, Donovan fully embraced the wide-eyed optimism of the flower power movement, his ethereal, ornate songs radiating a mystical beauty and childlike wonder; for better or worse, his recordings remain quintessential…

Our Review

James Brown Live at Home was an early idea for this double album's title; never mind that half of it was actually cut at King Records in Cincinnati. That includes the completely rethought version of “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose” that was one of the building blocks of early hip-hop, as well as a deceptively relaxed version of the title song. The stuff that was recorded in Augusta, G-A is nearly as enticing, including sizzling takes on recent singles such as “Licking Stick – Licking Stick” and “There Was a Time.” (The latter sits beside a version of the musical-theater staple “If I Ruled the World,” which Brown infuses with soul power.) A couple of instrumentals, “Lowdown Popcorn” (another studio track) and a jazz-tavern remake of Blood, Sweat & Tears' “Spinning Wheel,” even demonstrate the Bootsy-era J.B.s' ability to smolder instead of smoke.

Live and at home in Augusta, Ga (5 stars)
Buy this Album! If you are as picky as I am about my James Brown music, you will not be disappointed. You have never heard the God Father of Soul hit his high notes like this. A live performance that covers all of his basics and then some. The songs are not as rushed as they are in many of his live albums and the sound quality is excellent. A perfect display of pure emotion for the home crowd.

The Godfather of Soul (5 stars)
Lord bless and keep your child, James Brown, now that he has passed on to your arms. James, you're musical genius inspired a generation of artists, and you will live on in the music of all those who were inspired by your incredible spirit and humanity. All of Augusta will mourn your loss, and celebrate your return home to the arms of our Heavenly Father. God bless James, his family, and all of Augusta.

The Godfather of Soul (5 stars)
With Brother Brown, you have to ingest him in sections: The early sixties was his do wop phase. The mid-sexties was his pure soul phase. And, the late sixties to early seventies was pure unadulterated funk. Yes, this album can be call "Introduction to Funk 101"…………."Class Is In Session Students!"

Our Review

At the time of its initial release in 1970, Mad Dogs & Englishmen was a multi-format assault. In the pre-DVD age, the concert film could only be viewed in theaters, so the double gatefold live album was the only available souvenir for this British soul singer who was enjoying critical and commercial success as a master interpreter of other people’s music. The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” is good fun, but Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” turns the ageless folk song into a tough soul shout. The Box Tops’ “The Letter” is equally infused with blue-eyed soul and some fierce horns. And that’s how it is throughout. Years of heavy drinking and hard living would damage Cocker’s voice and career and he would eventually settle into the mellower reaches of adult-contemporary, but these recordings are scary in their passion and rewarding in their artistic scope. Whether he’s tearing through “Cry Me a River” or “Let’s Go Get Stoned” or settling into Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on the Wire,” Cocker has both the virtuosity to make a grand statement and the grit to make it sound believable. The expanded edition includes eight previously unreleased live performances — including a definitive cover of the Band’s “The Weight” — and several studio recordings to make this even more of a landmark in Cocker’s career.

A Great LIVE Album (4 stars)
This is by far the better of the 2 "Mad Dogs" CD's that are offered by iTunes. This one also includes songs by Leon Russell and also includes studio versions of some of the hit songs (as well as their LIVE versions, for contrast).
For best enjoying pleasure, though, go download the movie version, its great!
