Launched his career (4 stars)
This album launched Billy Joel's career so it is really surprising that no reviews have been posted. Here's one. Piano Man was his first hit. I've grown tired of it over the years but objectively it's a better than average song. Captain Jack was a concert favorite and a staple of AOR radio. You're My Home and If I Only Had the Words to Tell You are early ballads that foreshadowed much more successful ballads like Just The Way You Are. W

The best and classic Billy Joel (5 stars)
I admire all his work, especially early, but this nearly debut effort will always be one of my all-time favorite albums. I listen to and love each song.

I Beg To Differ (5 stars)
Billy Joel is not a poor lyricist, in fact he is the greatest to ever live. His lyrics are interesting, entertaining, beautiful, and overall ingenious. For example, in his classic "Everybody Loves You Now," a song that doesn't happen to be included on this disc, there is one of the best lyrics of all-time. That line is "they all want your white body and they await your reply. But between you and me and the Staten Island fe

Born: May 09, 1949 in New York, NY [The Bronx]
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar…

The Peak of the Gabriel Era (5 stars)
By far the best album the Genesis made with Gabriel around, even though Lamb Lies down on Broadway had some glorious moments. No less than two era-defining guitar solos by the under-appreciated virtuoso Hackett – Dancing with the Moonlit Knight contains one of the earliest recorded solos based on tapping, at the time when Eddie VH was still playing in the dirt, and the magnificent Firth of Fifth. Even though this is a proper prog-rock (or sy

Here it is: (5 stars)
This is the best album put out by the classic Genesis lineup. Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett, and Rutherford put everything together with a combination of real talent, experience, and cohesion. The sound had matured by this point, and everyone knew what to expect from each other. This was simply their best group effort, and brought us classics such as Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, and I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). This is the most

Biography

Formed: 1966 in Godalming, England
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups,…
