Biography

Formed: 1966 in San Francisco, CA
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Steve Miller's career has encompassed two distinct stages: one of the top San Francisco blues-rockers during the late '60s and early '70s, and one of the top-selling pop/rock acts of the mid- to late '70s and early '80s with hits like “The Joker,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock'n Me,” and “Abracadabra.” Miller was turned on to music by his father, who worked as a pathologist but knew stars like Charles Mingus and Les Paul, whom he brought home as guests; Paul taught the young Miller some guitar chords…

Our Review

Few albums have a backstory as bizarre as 1978’s Here My Dear. Unable to afford the divorce from his first wife Anna Gordy (sister Motown chief Berry Gordy), Marvin Gaye arranged to give her half the royalties from his next album as a form of alimony. Full of spite for his wife and his record label, Gaye intended to record a lazy, appalling album, but during the process he found himself unable to shut out his true emotions. Therefore Here My Dear ended up being a deeply personal rumination on his marriage. It exudes both anger and relief, and at the same time Gaye appears intoxicated by the memories of years past. In many ways, it is a brooding, depressive album, yes t
he recordings also have a spacious, warm tone, as if Marvin is opening the door and inviting the listeners to share his private space. It is the most unmitigated testimonial of Gaye’s career, and large parts of the album feel improvised, as if Gaye is living out his feelings in real time. Here My Dear is sober, and at times frighteningly realistic, even as it opens into the celestial planes of “Anna’s Song,” “I Met a Little Girl” and “Falling In Love Again.”

Beautifully Genius!!! (5 stars)
WOW!!!…..I've waited sooo long for the expanded edition of this album and it was well worth it! The alternate mixes and takes really accent the beauty of this album. Marvin's harmonies are just pure genius! Though the subject matter of heartbreak and love lost are sorrowful, this album is a joyous listen!

Classic (5 stars)
This is the most honest album I have ever heard, and the best. It flows with ease, if singing about a painful experience in your life can do that. Anyway worth every penny and more.

The Alternates Are Incredible (5 stars)
If you are familiar with Here My Dear, buy this for the alternative versions/mixes.

They are stunning, incredible and jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Dear God, it's almost a completely different album.

Marvin's Masterpiece (5 stars)
I'm predjudiced about the grandness, enormity, and brilliance of this album. In 1978 having been screwed by a local radio station in Los Angeles, having no job and no prospects Zeola Gaye (Marvin's sister) came to my aid by introducing me to Jan . She was auditioning backup singers for this remarkable album. I got the job along with a brother and sister from San Francisco and the rest is history…Though I never got paid for my work. Singi

I AM SO GLAD THAT I FINALLY FOUND THIS ALBUM!!!! THIS ONE WILL TAKE YOU WAY BACK
THIS IS OF COURSE OLD SCHOOL BUT IT HAS A NEO-SOUL FLAVOR. MARVIN GAYE WROTE THIS ONE AS A RESULT OF A DIVORCE SETTLEMENT FOR HIS WIFE ANNA AND SHE RECEIVED ALL OF THE MONEY FROM THE SALES OF THIS PROJECT….THUS THE TITLE…..HERE MY DEAR
IF YOU LOVE MARVIN GAYE YOU WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM ESPECIALLY,EVERYONE NEEDS LOVE
AND WHEN DID YOU STOP LOVING ME..THIS MUSIC

And Not A Happy Ending With Jan (4 stars)
In all of the justifiable praise for, and analysis of, Here, My Dear, this album's comment on the status of his relationship with Janis Hunter has been consistently overlooked. While "Falling In Love Again" has Marvin rhapsodizing about his new wife, we all know how that union ended, which was in turmoil at the time of the making of Here, My Dear. Note how "Falling In Love Again" fades into the album closer: a :44 second

Biography

Formed: 1974 in Pasadena, CA
Genre: Rock
Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art…

A must buy-you deserve it (5 stars)
Growing up in the 70's, and listening to Cat, as he was known back in the day was just a treat. His music still holds up…..it's singer-songwriting at its best…coming home after school as a child, I remember the smell of our house as mom would be doing the spring cleaning, and hearing Cat on the turntable 🙂 Thanks Yusuf

Thank God he didn't make music in the 80's (3 stars)
The 1980's was a horrible time for any folk folk musicians or rock musicians in general. They got swept
up in the technology and digi drums and s****y sounding synths and were dragged towards this desolate landscape
I was that Cat must have suffered the same fate, but looking at his bio he stopped making music in 78'
It was a smart move, and looking back I respect him much more and I'm sure he is satisfied to say that all

Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou, was the son of a Swedish mother and a Greek father who ran a restaurant in London. He became interested in folk music and rock & roll in his teens while attending Hammersmith College and in 1965 began performing under the name Steve Adams. Our Review

It’s hard to overestimate the impact that the Doobie Brothers’ Minute By Minute (1978) had upon the pop music world of its time. It's the album that marks the Doobies’ blossoming into a sophisticated R&B-rock powerhouse, thanks largely to the recruitment of singer/songwriter/keyboardist Michael McDonald whose yearning vocals and feel for intricately-woven rhythms made “What A Fool Believes” into a Number One single in early 1979. McDonald’s other contributions to Minute By Minute — most notably “Here To Love You,” “Open Your Eyes” and the elegantly jazzy title track — display a similar mastery of the easy-flowing groove and his fellow Brothers shine on these tracks as well. Patrick Simmons rocks convincingly on “Don’t Stop To Watch The Wheels” and reasserts his finger-picking prowess on “Steamer Land Breakdown.” Jeff “Skunk” Baxter’s scorching lead guitar and Tiran Porter’s firm-yet-funky bass lines are likewise crucial to the sound. For all the impeccable musicianship displayed here, it’s the strength of the hook-laden tunes that accounts for the album’s enormous success. Minute By Minute went on to receive platinum certification and multiple Grammy Awards.

Michael's Doobie Brothers (4 stars)
As Michael McDonald joined the Doobies, he brought a new tone and new sound to this great band. His tremendous range and soothing/coo-ing voice lends itself to some of the best songs of their time. "What a Fool Believes" and "Minute By Minute" punctuate Michael's direction for the band with a classic sound and feel for music that invites the listener to sit back and enjoy complex melody and harmony blended together by o

When you buy a record at 16 years of age, you don't expect to be listening to it at 44. Minute by Minute holds up. Recorded during a tumultuous time within the band, the varied song genres reflect the schizophrenic nature of the Doobie Brothers by 1978. This band could play it all and play it well. And it's all displayed on Minute by Minute, blue-eyed soul, pop, hard rock, and country blue-grass. This album was Michael McDonald's tour d
