Biography

Formed: 1976 in Crawley, England
Genre: Alternative
Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, few were as enduring and popular as the Cure. Led through numerous incarnations by guitarist/vocalist Robert Smith (born April 21, 1959), the band became notorious for its slow, gloomy dirges and Smith's ghoulish appearance, a public image that often hid the diversity of the Cure's music. At the outset, the Cure played jagged, edgy pop songs before slowly evolving into a more textured outfit. As one of the…

Our Review

Entering the country starsweepstakes without great fanfare or flash, Alan Jackson quickly won a massive audience through the strength of his music and the sincerity of his persona. His 1989 debut Here In The Real World sets the tone for his future releases — the songs manage to sound both tradition-rooted and modern, while the production (courtesy of Keith Stegall and Scott Hendricks) keeps the glitz at a minimum while remaining radio-friendly. Jackson's easy-going vocal manner fits the tenor of the material perfectly, skirting the wild edge of barroom balladry while conveying a guy-next-door charm. The album's lighter fare — most notably “She Don't Get the Blues” and “Ace of Hearts” — have an unaffected warmth about them. The autobiographical “Chasin' That Neon Rainbow” celebrates the artist's dues-paying days. Most outstanding are ballads like the understated “Wanted” and the uplifting “I'd Love You All Over Again” where, without false histrionics, Jackson proves himself a master of modern country romance. A confident opening statement by a natural country talent, Here In The Real World still sounds like the real thing.

This is the Album that started it all. (5 stars)
this is his very first CD. it still has some of his very best songs o it. buy it you'll love it.

Strong songwriter, great voice, perfect pitch (5 stars)
Love this album, great songs well written, about life, love, persistence and family. I get lifted listening to these songs, Jackson's voice is soothing and he has the Blues & Soul working to convey a message. Praise for his wife who supported him during the lean years "Chasin that Neon Rainbow & I'd love you all over again". His Parents are serenaded in "Home" and the title track speaks for itself, Life ain't easy

Here In The Real World (5 stars)
For a breakout recording this is a great one! If you don't like this one you don't like country music..

Biography

Born: October 17, 1958 in Newnan, GA
Genre: Country
Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson was the most popular male country singer of the '90s. An heir to the new traditionalist movement of the '80s, Jackson's approach was rooted in classic honky tonk yet remained comfortably within the contemporary mainstream. Jackson's hallmark was consistency — he wrote many of his own hits, and his way with a hook was part of the reason he never really hit a commercial dry spell, even into the new millennium. He also projected a modest, wholesome, down-to-earth…

Our Review

Janet Jackson’s previous album, Control, had seen the artist’s firm declaration of artistic independence rewarded with spectacular commercial success. Three years may have ensued before this 1989 follow-up, but any notion that Jackson’s hard-won superstardom had inspired her to rest on her laurels were quickly dispelled only a handful of songs into this collection’s expansive 20 tracks. In fact Jackson seems content about very little here – especially the general state of mankind. While societal protest had long been the province of hip-hop, Janet brought its essence onto the dance floor and into mainstream r&b with a muscular artistic ambition here that’s hard to ignore. Yet she was also shrewd enough to retain the musical catalysts behind much of Control’s success, and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis responded by setting such sociopolitical infused songs like “The Knowledge” and “State of the World” to spare, infectious beats that only served to add a compelling dollop of irony to the mix.

Pinnacle of her artistry (5 stars)
Let's forget about sales figures, chart positions, and all of that stuff for a moment.
This album was huge in other ways, too. For one, it was a huge statement for Janet as an artist: Here was someone who not only could hold her own against her hugely successful brother/family, but proved that her success with "Control" was not a fluke.
She also showed that she could still work a groove while also being socially conscious, sexy,

Few celebrity siblings can emerge from the shadows of their already famous relations to become superstars in their own right and with their own distinct personalities. That's exactly what Janet Jackson did in becoming one of the biggest female pop and R&B stars of the '80s and '90s. Since her breakthrough in 1986 with the album Control, Jackson's career as a hitmaker has been a model of consistency, rivaling Madonna and Whitney Houston in terms of pop chart success over the long haul. What made me a DM fan !! (5 stars)
Some performers have a very rough time translating from their albums presentation to a live venue. You wouldn't think that an electronic/synth/dance ensemble like Depeche Mode would be able to pull it off….but they do….exceptionally well.
This was my introduction to Depeche Mode right after I graduated high school, and I've been a fan ever since. Hopefully we can see the documentary/concert film on iTunes someday that this is the comp

Excellent! (5 stars)
I wore this album out growing up! Saw them live in 1998 after Dave's suicide attempt, I was afraid I might not get the chance again. They were so amazing live, we went again the next night. So much energy and Dave was on fire! I am so happy they are still making music and performing. They are a one of a kind band and this album is one of the great Live albums out there.

Great (5 stars)
I'm not a devote fan of them, but my dad used to play this album all the time and I grew up with it, I really love this!

Formed: 1980 in Basildon, Essex, England

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more…

Immortal Masterpiece (5 stars)
I am not going to write a "review," because any efforts to compare this work to anything is an exercise in futility. When this album came out in 1989, it blew open a sonic inventory that hadn't ever really been heard before. 20 years later, it still stands out as a masterwork of composition, production, and engineering. This album more than any other I've ever heard really evokes a sense of place. WHAT place will depend on the

Absolutely Original (5 stars)
It's hard to imagine a soundtrack getting any better. "The Last Temptation of Christ" was an unnecessarily controversial movie–all those protestors carrying signs and they hadn't even seen it–so this soundtrack was largely overlooked. Peter Gabriel's songs and lyrics are some of the most detailed, soulful, and introspective experiences. For this soundtrack, Gabriel assembles acoustic and electronic sounds from across the globe

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and…

It took several tries before Kenny Rogers became a star. As a member of the First Edition (and the New Christy Minstrels before that), he shared in some million-sellers, among them “Reuben James” and “Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town,” an excellent Mel Tillis song about a disabled veteran. But superstardom lay ahead for this Texan, and it arrived in the late '70s. His experience with the two previous pop groups had prepared him well: he knew the easy listening audience was out there, and he supplied…
