Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. Our Review

Nirvana opened the door and Pearl Jam walked right in. Eighties nerf-metal had finally run its course and in its place came a tougher, socially conscious breed of band. But where Nirvana represented the thornier aspects of punk rock, Pearl Jam embraced the musical traditions of classic guitar rock. Mike McCready's Hendrix-Clapton influenced solos can be heard squeaking out of the material (“Even Flow”), while Eddie Vedder had the Bono-esque pomp and circumstance that immediately fit the arenas and festivals where the band would soon perform. Though the group's core was formed with the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam hadn't been together long when it recorded this debut album. Yet, Ten is a confident, fully realized collection of songs dealing with a wide range of subjects from school violence (“Jeremy”) to difficult family relationships (“Release”). It spawned several huge hits (“Alive,” “Even Flow,” “Jeremy”) and contains the group's live favorite “Black,” an emotionally charged brooder that helped define the group as 'spokesmen' for their rapidly dissatisfied Generation X audience.

What a Shame (5 stars)
You know it's funny….you listen to a landmark album like this and then you fast-foward ten years or so and all there is are bands like Nickelback, Hinder and Fall Out Boy. If you know anything about real rock music…you just kind of say to yourself- What happened? Truly a shame.

great album (5 stars)
this is one of the best albums ever. but what the hell is iTunes problem they always take is out of the stores so that it loses all of it's ratings and reviews. they also jacked up the price of a bunch of songs to 1.29.

Great (5 stars)

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Berkeley, CA
Genre: Alternative
Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Out of all the post-Nirvana alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream, Green Day were second only to Pearl Jam in terms of influence. At their core, Green Day were simply punk revivalists who recharged the energy of speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs. Though their music wasn't particularly innovative, they brought the sound of late-'70s punk to a new, younger generation with Dookie, their 1994 major-label debut. Dookie sold over ten million copies, paving the way for a string of multi-platinum…

Our Review

When Brand New Man was released in 1991, few predicted that Brooks & Dunn would go on to become the most successful country duo of the modern era. Still, the success of their debut was well-earned. Since the 1970s Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn had worked the club circuits in Texas, Oklahoma and Nashville, playing in separate bands. Each was a seasoned veteran of honky tonk entertainment when Arista paired them up in 1990. The three big hits from their first album typify a roadhouse setlist. There’s the catchy singalong (“Brand New Man”), the tavern lament (“Neon Moon”) and the dance floor showstopper (“Boot Scootin’ Boogie”). The rest of the songs are rock solid, and Brooks & Dunn would go on to build a reputation for being straight shooters. While there are hints of the pop and rock influences that would make them superstars, Kix and Ronnie appear here as traditionalists with a deeply-honed understanding of their audience.

Brooks and Dunn's finest effort! (5 stars)
This includes some of B&D's biggest hits like, "Boot Scootin' Boogie", "Neon Moon" and the title track. But the popular songs aren't the only diamonds here. Every song would make a worthy single! In particular, the last track. "Still in Love With You" stands out as one of Kix Brooks' finest performances and a hidden gem of country music from the early 90s. If you like toe tapping, Honky Tonkin' music from st

The undisputed kings of the '90s line-dancing craze, Brooks & Dunn are not only the biggest-selling duo in country music history, they've also sold more records than any other duo period, including Simon & Garfunkel. Ronnie Dunn was the quietly intense singer with the soulful voice, while Kix Brooks played the part of the high-energy showman. Neither had been able to break through as a solo act, but together they hit upon a winning formula of rambunctious, rocked-up honky tonk with punchy,…

Before Alabama, bands were usually relegated to a supporting role in country music. In the first part of the century, bands were popular with audiences across the country, but as recordings became available, nearly every popular recording artist was a vocalist, not a group. Alabama was the group that made country bands popular again. Emerging in the late '70s, the band had roots in both country and rock; in fact, many of Alabama's musical concepts, particularly the idea of a performing band, owed…

Our Review

For the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s landmark Nevermind album, several different versions are available. All feature remastered sound that brings up the volume and slightly smooths the rougher edges without sacrificing the band’s power and appeal. The super deluxe edition is the ultimate collection; yet for those wanting to experience more music from that rich creative era without breaking the bank, the deluxe edition has a terrific cross-section of outtakes, live cuts, b-sides, and original Nevermind recordings made with producer Butch Vig at his Smart Studios, along with “boombox demos” that feature Nirvana at its most raw and ready. The riches are overwhelming. The “boombox” recordings of “Old Age,” “Come as You Are,” and, of course, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” prove how much Kurt Cobain’s voice could do naturally. The cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Here She Comes Now,” the alternate take of “Polly,” and multiple versions of “Something in the Way” show off the band’s underrated softer side.

How to Write a Review That Nobody Will Read (5 stars)
Nevermind the naysayers that are wasting their time writing negative reviews of this classic. Fans such as I aren't paying attention to your incoherent ramblings, so save your breath and whatever calories you have burned by typing. Seriously though, it's pretty hilarious how off base such comments are. The record changed a lot of things and not all of it for better, but to deny it's relevance is just plain ignorant. Nevermind Super Deluxe Version (5 stars)
Having listened to Nevermind in this remastered form (Super Deluxe Boxset), I must say it is quite good. The sound is very clear when compared to the 1991 CD. The volume has been slightly increased but it luckily is not a victim of the loudness wars. The Smart Sound Sessions tracks show the band's beginning and are decent sound quality but those versions are hardly essential. You won't find yourself using the repeat button. The Boombox

Tim The Clown (5 stars)
Really Tim? You don't have to like this album, but it changed a lot. First, it was recorded before Pro Tools which most of the bands you like now use. So, you actually had to have talent back then. While I enjoy some of the bands today, they really all sound the same when you think about it. Second, this album came out before Nickelback , Staind, Matchbox Twenty, and brought alternative music to the forefront. It was a whole movement. So, yo

Prior to Nirvana, alternative music was consigned to specialty sections of record stores, and major labels considered it to be, at the very most, a tax write-off. After the band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, nothing was ever quite the same, for better and for worse. Nirvana popularized punk, post-punk, and indie rock, unintentionally bringing it into the American mainstream like no other band to date. While their sound was equal parts Black Sabbath (as learned by fellow Washington underground…
